FGCU Bounces Back to Down Iowa State 5-2
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Just 24 hours after falling short in a comeback effort to Houston by a score of 4-3, the FGCU women’s tennis team rebounded on Sunday afternoon to take down Iowa State 5-2 at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
In its second home dual match of the spring season, FGCU picked up its first home win of the 2013 season and improved to 3-1 overall.
“We did a fantastic job today in doubles,” said head coach Jen Gabou. “We were in the same position as yesterday, but today we converted. Gyanna Mandic did a great job coming from behind to win in the third and saw a lot of fight out there today on every court.”
The Green and Blue took seize early on in the match as they took the doubles point from the Cyclones as Elizabeth Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch, Fla.) and Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch, Fla.) won the first doubles match on the day for FGCU. Johanna Sterkel (Schwitzen, Germany/Carl-Theodor-Schule HS) and Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies) picked up a very important second doubles win by a score of 8-6 to give the Eagles the doubles point and take an early 1-0 lead.
The Eagles and Cyclones had some familiarity with each other as Iowa State made the trip to Fort Myers, Fla. in late-January for the FGCU Spring Invitational which was a singles tournament held at the FGCU Tennis Complex. With some of FGCU’s squad having competed against some of Iowa State’s over the course of the three-day event, FGCU knew what they were getting into when they Cyclones made the return trip.
Freshmen Johanna Sterkel (Schwitzen, Germany/Carl-Theodor-Schule HS) and Elizabeth Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch, Fla.) both won their singles matches on the day in the four and five spots respectively as each of the first year competitors finished 2-0 on the singles courts this weekend.
Junior Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/De Kuilen HS) also swept the weekend on the singles courts as she followed up yesterday’s three-set come from behind victory with a 6-4, 6-4 two set sweep against Iowa State’s Emma Waites in the sixth spot.
The Green and Blue will head to Orlando for a matchup with UCF for their next dual match of the 2013 spring season on Thursday, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m. as they look to remain unbeaten on the road.
