ORLANDO, Fla. – The FGCU women’s tennis team kicked off the fall 2013 season with a pair of doubles victories over UCF during the opening day of the UCF Knights Invitational Friday in Orlando.

FGCU took on host UCF playing two doubles matches, claiming the win in both. Unfortunately the success FGCU saw against UCF could not be duplicated in its singles matchup as the Eagles fell in all five contests to USF, the program new FGCU women’s tennis head coach Courtney Vernon left earlier this month.

“I’m excited to see what is to come for these ladies,” Vernon said. “They showed courage while playing doubles today. In singles I saw a lot of fight up until the last point. We have a lot to work on, but I see determination in their eyes. I have some hungry girls that want to grow as players and it’s exciting.”

The sister act of Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) and Elizabeth Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) played a close match against Josephine Haraldson and Courtney Griffith, but came out on top with an 8-6 win. Also racking of a victory were Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/De Kuilen HS) and Johanna Sterkel (Schwetzingen, Germany/Carl-Theodor-Schule HS) playing an even closer match against Bogna Nowicka and Caroline Eberhart. In the end the Eagles were able to outplay the Knights, finishing 8-7 (10-8).

The Eagles return to the court tomorrow facing USF in doubles play beginning at 10:00 a.m., with singles play against Florida Atlantic to follow.
