Sarah and Elizabeth Means kept their matches close during FGCU's fall to USF

TAMPA – The FGCU women’s tennis team fell at the hands of No. 62 USF 7-0 in Wednesday afternoon’s dual match on the USF Varsity Tennis Courts. The Eagles move to 3-4 on the season as the Bulls improve to 3-2.

“I saw some good steps today,” head coach Courtney Vernon said. “We have a lot of improvement to make but we will continue to work on our goals and stay firmly committed to growing every day.”

USF claimed an early lead after winning two doubles matches for a 1-0 advantage. Taking the No. 1 match 6-2 from Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) and Elizabeth Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) were Kayla Rizzolo and Loreto Alonso-Martinez, as their teammates  Olaya Garrido and Fanny Fracassi beat Breana Stampfli (Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago/St. Joseph’s Convent) and Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies) 6-3.

While they were unable to capture a win, two of the team’s members kept their singles matches competitive.

The only member of the Green and Blue to take her match into three sets was Sarah Means, but she fell just two points shy of a win over Rizzolo in the one singles slot. Means pulled ahead to win the first set 6-3, but Rizzolo flipped the score in the second to even the match at one set a piece. In the deciding 10-point tiebreaker, Means fought hard but came out on the wrong end, falling 10-8.

Like her sister, Elizabeth Means made her opponent work for every point and the eventual win in the No. 4 match. Battling USF’s Fracassi, Means dropped set one, 6-4, before narrowly falling short of a comeback in the second as Fracassi claimed it 7-6 (7-3).

The Green and Blue will continue action when they travel to Boca Raton for a dual match against Florida Atlantic on Feb. 22 at 1:30 p.m. For complete coverage of FGCU women’s tennis follow us on Twitter at @FGCU_WTEN and visit www.FGCUAthletics.com where full recaps and results will be available at the end of each day.
