Women's Tennis Fares Well in ITA First Round

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Two Florida Gulf Coast University women’s tennis players have advanced to the Round of 32 at the Wilson/ITA Division II Southeast Regional Championships at the FGCU Tennis Center on Friday. Sophomore Maria Maggiorini (Buenos Aires, Argentina) was a two set winner over Tessa Caprio of Carson Newman (6-1, 6-10 while sophomore Maria Braniecka (Piotrowek, Poland) drew a bye to move into Friday’ second round singles action. Five other Eagles did not fare as well in the first round. Sophomore Brett Kinley fell to Alejandra Boeker of Lynn in two sets (6-1, 6-1), junior Jonalea Hileman (Fort Worth, Texas) lost to Silje Aarum of Florida Southern (6-4, 6-4) and freshman Joanne Power lost to Erika Belletini of Carson Newman (6-0, 6-4). Also, senior Tenille Elias lost to Andrea Moncada of Nova Southeastern (6-1, 6-0) while junior Krista Polulak (Sarasota, Fla.0 was defeated by Meritxell Gol of Florida Southern (6-2, 6-1). In doubles play, Maggiorini and Polulak defeated Victoria Drescher and Stephanie Zevallos of Nova Southeastern (8-1) while seventh seeded Braniecka and Hileman rolled past Jennifer Jones and Cassie Moulton of Carson Newman (8-0) to advance to the Round of 16 on Friday. Kinley and Elias fell to Belletini and Caprio (8-3). The tournament concludes on Sunday with the winners advancing to the Oct. 13-16 Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Small College Championships, also to be held at FGCU.
