Eagles Women Fall in Sweet Sixteen at ITA Regional

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Sophomores Maria Braniecka and Maria Maggiorini had their runs to the Wilson?ITA Division II Southeast Region singles championships stopped Friday. Braniecka fell to Ulia Talalenko of Nova Southeastern while Maggiorini ran into top seeded Ildiko Csordas of Barry in Round of 16 play at the FGCU Tennis Complex. Talalenko continued her surprising play with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Braniecka. Csordas, who didn’t lose a game in reaching the Sweet Sixteen, fought off a gutsy effort by Maggiorini for a 6-1, 7-5 win. Six of the top eight seeds in the women’s main singles draw advanced to the quarterfinals, including Csordas, second seed Tasi Purcell of Rollins, and third seed Greta Trotman of Barry. Three seeded players from Lynn also advanced to Saturday’s quarterfinal play, including fourth seed Alexandra Schunck, fifth seed Vici Weltz and seventh seed Dragana Ilic. Anastasiya Shevchenko of Rollins was the only other unseeded player to advance. Singles play on Saturday will feature Csordas against Weltz, Schunck taking on Talalenko, Ilic meeting Trotman and Shevchenko facing Purcell. Rain halted play before quarterfinal action could begin in doubles play. Maggiorini (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and junior Krista Polulak (Sarasota, Fla.) are scheduled to face Julia Lima and Carolyn Niedermayer of Eckerd. Seventh seeded Braniecka (Piotrowek, Poland) and junior Jonalea Hileman (Fort Worth, Texas) will face Talalenko and Anna Schmidtmann of Nova Southeastern. The tournament concludes on Sunday with the winners advancing to the Oct. 13-16 Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Small College Championships, also to be held at FGCU.
