FORT MYERS, Fla. – The third day of the Wilson/ITA Southeast Region Women’s Championships saw the top two singles seeds fall in semifinal play and three of the top four seeds advance to the semifinals in doubles play at the FGCU Tennis Complex. The women’s singles championship will feature third seed Greta Trotman of Barry against fifth seed Vici Weltz of Lynn. Trotman beat seventh seed Dragana Ilic of Lynn (6-3, 6-1) in the quarterfinals and second seed Tasi Purcell of Rollins (6-2, 6-3) in the semifinals. Weltz upset top seed Ildiko Csordas of Barry (7-5, 6-4) in the quarterfinals before rolling past unseeded Ulia Talalenko of Nova Southeastern (6-1, 6-0) in a semifinal match. In the doubles draw, Ilic and Weltz moved into one semifinal with a pair of wins and await the winner of Sunday morning’s match between Florida Gulf Coast’s Maria Maggiorini and Krista Polulak against Rollins’ Purcell and Marnie Mahler. The second doubles semifinal will feature the second seeded tandem of Csordas and Zuleta of Barry against fourth seeded teammates Helen Wisniewski and Trotman. The Eagles tandem of sophomore Maria Braniecka (Piotrowek, Poland) and Jonalea Hileman (Fort Worth, Texas) fell in their quarterfinal doubles match to Csordas and Zuleta. The singles and doubles consolation matches were cancelled after Friday’s play was shortened due to rain. The tournament concludes on Sunday with the winners advancing to the Oct. 13-16 Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Small College Championships, also to be held at FGCU.
