FGCU Women's Tennis Announces Schedule
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University interim women’s tennis coach J. Webb Horton has announced his team’s 2006 spring schedule.
The Eagles have 17 matches this spring, including 11 home matches and 10 matches against NCAA Division II Southeast Region competition. In all, seven of the Eagles opponents are ranked in the pre-season Division II top-40.
The spring season will open on Saturday, February 4 as FGCU travels to Webber International. After a road trip to NAIA power Embry-Riddle and an exhibition with Hillsborough Community College, the Eagles will host regional foe Lynn in their home opener on February 23 at the FGCU Tennis Complex. Other regional foes visiting FGCU this spring include #24 Eckerd, #20 Florida Southern, #3 Barry, and #7 Rollins. The Eagles will also travel to pre-season #1 Armstrong Atlantic, the defending national champion.
“We have a challenging schedule but our hope is to be in the top-20,” said Horton, who begins his first season as women’s coach. “But to get better we need to play the top teams. If we can beat the teams we should beat and pull out a few other wins, we should be in good shape.”
The Eagles are ranked 22nd in the pre-season poll, their highest ranking since joining Division II. FGCU finished last year 12-12.
