FORT MYERS, Fla. – No. 5 Lynn University blanked No. 22 Florida Gulf Coast University 9-0 on Thursday afternoon in Division II Southeast Region women’s tennis action at the FGCU Tennis Complex. The Knights improve to 3-0 in dual match play this spring while the Eagles’ record is even at 1-1. As they have now done in all three matches, Lynn jumped out to an early lead in the match with a sweep of the doubles competition. Dragana Ilic and Leigh Sheltonz held off FGCU’s Maria Braniecka and Jonalea Hileman 8-6 at No. 1 doubles. Then Vici Weltz and Gedville Norkute beat the Eagles’ tandem of junior Krista Polulak (Sarasota, Fla.) and sophomore Maria Maggiorini (Buenos Aires, Argentina) 8-4 while Ali Boeker and Alexandra Schunck picked up an 8-2 win over Brett Kinley (Boynton Beach, Fla.) and Lydia Diaz Galindo (Seville, Spain). Featuring three of the top 34 ranked singles players in Division II, the Fighting Knights rolled to straight set wins in all six singles matches. #5 Weltz topped Braniecka at No. 1, #30 Schunck was a winner over Maggiorini at No. 2 while Ilic won her 31st straight match with a win over Diaz-Galindo at N0. 4. Norkute, Shelton and Boeker were the Knights other singles winners. FGCU returns to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. when they travel to Florida Tech.
