MELBOURNE, Fla. – The No. 22 Florida Gulf Coast University women’s tennis team blanked Florida Tech 9-0 on Sunday afternoon in Division II Southeast Region women’s tennis action. FGCU improves to 2-1 in dual match play while Florida Tech falls to 2-4.
Sophomore Maria Braniecka (Piotrowek, Poland) and junior Jonalea Hileman (Fort Worth, Texas), ranked No. 25, teamed up for an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles. Junior Krista Polulak (Sarasota, Fla.) and sophomore Maria Maggiorini (Buenos Aires, Argentina) were 8-4 victors at No. 2 doubles while sophomore Brett Kinley (Boynton Beach, Fla.) and Joanne Power (Dublin, Ireland) won 8-0 at No.3 doubles.
In singles competition, Braniecka, ranked No. 48 in Division II singles, won a tough three-set match in No. 1 singles over Michaela Horvathova. Maggiorini, Hileman, Polulak and Power won in straight sets. FGCU picked up a forfeit win in the final singles match.
FGCU returns to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. when it hosts Puerto Rico- Mayaguez.
