J. Webb Horton Named Women's Tennis Head Coach

FORT MYERS, Fla. – J. Webb Horton has been named the new women’s tennis head coach after serving the past season on an interim basis. He assumed the duties of interim women’s head coach in June, 2005. Horton is also the head coach of the men’s tennis team. He guided both teams to very successful seasons this past year. Horton led the women’s tennis team to the NCAA Regional Finals this past season. FGCU was ranked No. 4 in the South Region and received an at-large big to the NCAA Regionals. FGCU lost to Lynn University who picked up their tenth straight region title. The Eagles, under the direction of Horton, finished the season ranked No. 13 with a 13-6 record. Horton's tennis team loses just two senior from this year's squad and the No. 1, 2, and 3 singles players as well as No. 1 doubles team all return for next season. In all, nine players will return next season for the Eagles. Horton has guided the FGCU men to a 61-21 dual match record during his tenure, including an NCAA tournament berth and a top-10 national ranking in 2004-05. FGCU advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament in 2005, its first season for NCAA post-season eligibility, after posting a 19-5 record for the most wins in school history. This past season, the Eagles made another appearance in the NCAA tournament. The No. 9 Eagles’ men were defeated by Florida Southern in the first round of the tourney. Horton, who resides in Fort Myers, also serves on the Board of Directors for the Lee County Community Tennis Association and is a member of the USA Tennis Florida Diversity Task Force.
