WINTERPARK, Fla., - The FGCU women’s tennis team competed in the C.L. Varner Memorial Invitational hosted by Rollins.
Three Eagles competed in the women’s ‘A’ singles draw. FGCU’s Maria Braniecka won her first round match-up against Silvia Frandji but fell in the second round. Maria Maggiorini received a first round bye and cruised in her second round match-up with a 6-0, 6-1 win. Maggiorini fell in the third round to Anna Yakimchenkova, who advanced to the finals. The finals were rained out. Lauren Pfiffer was the other Eagle in the draw, and fell in the second round to Marnie Mahler of Rollins.
In the women’s ‘B’ draw, Brett Kinley, Maggie Caulk and Leah Johnson were both knocked out in the first round. Kinley wound up winning the back draw with three consecutive straight set wins.
In ‘A’ doubles action, Braniecka and Maggiorini fell in the first round to UCF’s team of Belbacha and McNicol 8-5. In the ‘B’ draw, Pfeiffer and Johnson won their first round match up as did Caulk and Kinley. However, both doubles teams lost in the second round.
