WINTER PARK, Fla. – The FGCU Women’s Tennis team opened their fall season this weekend at the C.L. Varner Memorial Invitational hosted by Rollins College. Bright spots for the Eagles included Eva Sambrano and Leah Johnson, who each advanced to the quarterfinals of their respective draws, as well as the doubles team of Eva Sambrano and Lauren Pfeiffer, who also advanced to the quarterfinals of their draw.
For the tournament, singles and doubles were split into two draws. In the singles A draw, Eva Sambrano and Lauren Pfeiffer each won their opening round match. In the second round, Pfeiffer was eliminated by eventual singles A draw runner-up Gabriella Kovacs, while Sambrano advanced with a dominating 6-1, 6-1 victory. Eva was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Senka Softic of Florida Southern College, 6-3, 6-3. Softic eventually went on to win the singles A draw.
In the singles B draw, Leah Johnson easily advanced out of the first round with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Krishne Domenech. In the second round Johnson was able to defeat Rollins’ Bradleigh Lore in a very tightly contested match, 7-6 (5), 7-5. Leah was defeated in the quarterfinals by Kathleen Henry, 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles action, the team of Eva Sambrano and Lauren Pfeiffer was able to advance to the quarterfinals of the A draw before losing a close battle to Kayli Ragsdale and Margaret Junker of Rollins, 9-7.
“I am really proud of the way my girls competed this weekend,” coach Jennifer Gabou said. “Sambrano and Johnson made great strides with their games and I am confident that this team will reach their goals this coming spring.”
Next up for the Eagles is the ITA Southern Regional Championships in Athens, Georgia. The championships begin October 24th and run through October 27th.
