ATHENS, Ga. - Eva Sambrano and Lauren Pfeiffer traveled to the University of Georgia to take part in the 2008 ITA Southern Regional Women's Tennis Championships over the weekend. On Friday, the two paired up to take on the doubles team of Sasha Krupina and Christina Ngo of Georgia Tech. Krupina/Ngo defeated Sambrano/Pfeiffer by a score of 8-2.
After rain pushed back the singles tournament until Saturday, both Eva and Lauren were in action that morning. In the "A" singles bracket, Eva Sambrano defeated Christy Core of UCF 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. In the "B" singles bracket, Lauren Pfeiffer was also a winner, knocking off Kennesaw State's Courtney Cox 6-7 (5), 6-2, 1-0 (5). Later that afternoon, in the round of 32, Eva Sambrano was taken down by Alex Haney of Auburn, 6-1, 6-0. Haney, a senior, is currently ranked 51st in the country. Lauren Pfeiffer was also unable to advance out of the round of 32, as she was beaten by Stephanie Viera of Troy by a score of 6-0, 6-0.
The women's tennis team will be off until January when they host the Johan Kriek Classic. The tournament, which will be held at the FGCU Tennis Complex, will begin January 17th and run through January 19th.
