CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The FGCU women's tennis team opened up the 2008-09 season facing one of their toughest opponents of the year, and the Eagles were no match for the 13th-ranked Miami Hurricanes, falling 7-0.

The Hurricanes got off to a strong start, winning all three doubles matches to claim the doubles point.  Bianca Eichkorn and Michaela Kissell, ranked #14 in the country, started it with an 8-0 win over Maggie Caulk and Joanne Power.  Julia Cohen and Laura Vallverdu followed up with an 8-1 win over Priscillia Villemond and Eva Sambrano, and Claudia Wasilewski and Alessa Waibel finished off the doubles sweep with an 8-0 victory over Leah Johnson and Brittany Wadsworth.

In the singles competition, Miami did not let up at all.  With four of the six competitors ranked nationally, Miami would claim all six singles matches without losing a set.  At the #1 position, Julia Cohen, ranked 8th in the country, defeated Priscillia Villemond 6-0, 6-1.  At the #2 slot, #114 Laura Vallverdu knocked off Eva Sambrano 6-1, 6-1.  At the #3 position, Joanne Power fell to #20 Bianca Eichkorn, 6-0, 6-0.  At the #4 slot, #50 Michaela Kissell claimed a 6-0, 6-0 win over Leah Johnson.  At the #5 position, Claudia Wasilewski defeated Maggie Caulk, 6-0, 6-1.  Finally, at the #6 slot, Brittany Wadsworth was defeated by Lauren Greco, 6-0, 6-2.

After the match, first-year head coach Jennifer Gabou said, "the University of Miami has done a tremendous job with their players and I think they will go far this year.  It was great experience for our girls to get to play against such a highly ranked opponent early.  We will rebound and get ready to take on FAU next Saturday and I am looking forward to seeing how our team responds."

The Eagles will be back in action next Saturday, January 31st, taking on the Florida Atlantic Owls in Boca Raton, Florida.  The match is set to start at 1:00 PM.  The 2008-09 home opener for FGCU is now just under a month away, slated for February 21st at 10:00 AM against Northwestern State.
