DELAND, Fla. – The FGCU women’s tennis team fell to 0-3 on the season after losing at Stetson, 7-0. It was the first conference match for both schools.
Stetson took the doubles point after winning two of the three matches. Eva Sambrano and Maggie Caulk were the lone winners for the Eagles, defeating Breanna Atkinson and Katherine Nowicki, 8-7. The Hatters took the other two doubles matches by scores of 8-5 and 8-3.
In the singles competition, Stetson swept all six matches. Five of the six matches were very close, three of which went to a decisive third set, but FGCU was unable to come out on top in any of them. At the #1 position, Priscillia Villemond fell to Valentina Galbarini, 6-4, 7-5. Eva Sambrano, playing at the #2 slot, pushed Breanna Atkinson to three sets, but eventually lost 7-6 (7), 5-7, 6-3. At the #3 slot, Joanne Power was knocked off by Unnati Purushotham, 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-1. Leah Johnson, playing at the #4 position, was defeated by Katherine Nowicki, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. At the #5 position, Maggie Caulk fell to Samantha Lange, 6-2, 6-2. And playing at the #6 position, Heather St. John lost to Jackie Faulk, 7-5, 7-6 (3).
The Eagles will be right back at it tomorrow afternoon at UCF for a dual match scheduled for 1:00 PM. FGCU’s home opener is slated for Saturday, February 21st, at 10:00 AM against Northwestern State.
