FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s tennis team opens the 2010 spring season on Saturday (Jan. 16) when they host day one of the Hilton Garden Inn Eagle Invite at the FGCU Tennis Complex. The tournament features nine Division I schools from around the nation, including a pair of nationally-ranked schools and a handful of nationally-ranked singles players.
There will be over 50 student athletes from around the country converging on the campus of Florida Gulf Coast University for the tournament. Arkansas comes in as the 19th-ranked team in the country, while South Florida is ranked 75th. USF also boasts two singles players ranked in the top 100, Ecaterina Vasenina (52) and Irene Rehberger (77). Also, Akron’s Zaruhi Harutyunyan comes in ranked 75th in singles.
There will be seven flights of eight player draws and four flights for doubles. The tournament will continue Sunday (Jan. 17) and wrap up on Monday (Jan. 18). Play will begin at 8:00 am daily with doubles first followed by singles being played until early evening. All matches will be played at the FGCU Tennis Complex. FGCU head coach Jennifer Gabou said, "I am extremely excited to host this tournament as we will have some talented teams from around the country in attendance. There is not a Division I tennis event like this one in Southwest Florida with a field as large as this."
