FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s tennis team picked up a couple impressive victories on Monday, as sophomore Katharine Evans won the Flight 6 consolation bracket and freshman Morgan Bechtel took third place in Flight 7 in the final day of the Hilton Garden Inn Eagle Invite at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
“Our team had some wins over big schools this weekend,” said head coach Jennifer Gabou “to see us beating FAMU, Purdue, NW State, and Missouri in singles matches shows our improvement from last year.”
Sophomore Katharine Evans (Fort Myers, Fla.) pulled out a big win over Purdue’s Kristen Magi, 6-1, 6-4, to take home the Flight 6 consolation title. Evans victory came a day after defeating Northwestern State’s Bianca Schulz in straight sets. “I really wanted to win and losing wasn’t an option; this was probably my best win that I’ve ever had. I’m very happy,” said Evans.
Freshman Morgan Bechtel (Toledo, Ohio) topped a teammate to take third place in Flight 7, beating out Bibiana Almeida (Porto, Portugal), 7-6 (2), 7-6 (2), in the last match of the day.
In other action, South Florida’s Irene Rehberger captured both the singles and doubles titles in Flight 1 by defeating teammate Ecaterina Vasenina (USF), 1-6, 6-1, 10-2, in the singles finals. Also, Akron’s freshmen twin sensations Angelina Jogasuria and Angelika Jogasuria won Flight 2 and 3 singles respectively.
The Eagles will open dual match competition with three matches this weekend, beginning with a home contest against Troy University on Friday, January 22. Play is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at the FGCU Tennis Complex. The Blue and Green then hit the road for a pair of regional matches, starting with Central Florida on Saturday at 2:00 p.m., followed by Bethune-Cookman on Sunday at noon.
