FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s tennis team will open up the 2010 dual match season with three matches this weekend, beginning with the home opener against Troy University on Friday. The Eagles will then hit the road for matches with Central Florida (Saturday) and Bethune-Cookman (Sunday).
The Blue and Green are coming off a good showing at the FGCU Invitational tournament this past weekend. Katharine Evans (Fort Myers, Fla.) won the Flight 6 consolation bracket, defeating players from Purdue and Northwestern State along the way. Freshman Morgan Bechtel (Toledo, Ohio) took third place in Flight 7, defeating teammate Bibiana Almeida (Porto, Portugal) in the third-place match.
“Our team had some wins over big schools this weekend,” head coach Jennifer Gabou said after the tournament. “Playing against such a high level of competition this early will prepare us for the regular season and conference play.”
The Eagles will kick off the dual match season on Friday, January 22, with a home match against Troy University. The Trojans finished last season with a 17-5 record, losing to North Texas in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Conference tournament. Play is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
Saturday, January 23, FGCU will travel to Orlando for a match-up with Central Florida. The Knights lost in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA championships to Tulsa, finishing with an 11-10 record. The match is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
The Blue and Green will wrap up a busy weekend with another road match, this time at Bethune-Cookman in Daytona Beach. Last season, the Lady Wildcats finished 11-9, falling to eventual conference champion South Carolina State in the semifinals of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tennis Championships.
