ORLANDO, Fla. – Jessica Sweeting and Priscillia Villemond won their singles matches for the second straight day, but it wasn’t enough as the FGCU women’s tennis team lost to UCF 5-2 in Orlando on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles will travel to Daytona Beach tomorrow for a dual match at Bethune-Cookman.
Priscillia Villemond (Les Bordes, France) and Iris Rendon (San Antonio, Tex.) battled hard but lost the No. 1 doubles match to Jenny Frisell and Katie Orletsky, 9-7. The No. 2 doubles was also a close contest, but FGCU’s Jessica Sweeting (Freeport, Bahamas) and Katharine Evans (Fort Myers, Fla.) narrowly lost to the Knights’ Jenna Doerfler and Alexis Rodriguez, 8-6.
In singles play, Villemond improved to 2-0 on the season with a 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 victory over Allison Hodges at the No. 4 position. Sweeting also won for the second straight match, defeating Doerfler at No. 3, 6-4, 6-4. Rendon played well at No. 2, extending the first set to a tiebreak, but ended up losing 7-6 (0), 6-1. The Knights claimed straight set victories in the other three singles matches.
After playing three matches in as many days, the Eagles will get a bit of a break before their next match. FGCU will host Florida Atlantic on Friday, February 5, in the first of 11 consecutive home matches. The match is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
