DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The FGCU women’s tennis team picked up their first win of the season Sunday afternoon, sweeping Bethune-Cookman 7-0 in Daytona Beach. All six singles matches were straight-set victories for the Blue and Green. With the win, the Eagles improve to 1-2 on the season.
“Everyone played the way they’re supposed to play,” head coach Jennifer Gabou said. “I was glad to see us come out and sweep Bethune-Cookman the way we did.”
After sweeping all three doubles matches with relative ease, FGCU continued to dominate the Wildcats in singles competition. Iris Rendon (San Antonio, Tex.) cruised to a 6-0, 6-4 win over Katarina Szaboova at the No. 1 position, her first win as an Eagle. Jessica Sweeting (Freeport, Bahamas) and Priscillia Villemond (Les Bordes, France) each improved to 3-0 on the season, picking up wins at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively.
Katharine Evans (Fort Myers, Fla.) defeated Eva Hankova, 6-2, 6-0, at the No. 4 position, while freshmen Melissa Narzissenfeld (Tampa, Fla.) and Morgan Bechtel (Toledo, Ohio) prevailed at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively.
In the six singles matches combined, the Blue and Green dropped just 17 games out of the 89 total games played (19.1-percent).
The Eagles will have nearly two weeks to prepare for their next match, a home contest against Florida Atlantic on Friday, February 5. The match is set for a 2:30 pm start at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
