FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s tennis team will open conference play this Sunday (Feb. 14) when they host Stetson at 1 p.m. at the FGCU Tennis Complex. Before that, the Eagles will travel to Gainesville for a match with Florida A&M on Friday (Feb. 12) at 1:30 p.m.
The Blue and Green (1-2) opened the 2010 dual match season three weekends ago, dropping close matches to Troy and Central Florida before sweeping Bethune-Cookman 7-0. Senior Priscillia Villemond (Les Bordes, France) and junior Jessica Sweeting (Freeport, Bahamas) each recorded perfect 3-0 singles records to start the season. Sweeting, a transfer from USF, earned A-Sun player of the week honors for her effort.
Last weekend, FGCU’s match against Florida Atlantic was postponed due to rain. The two teams will try to make up the match later this season, but a date and time have yet to be determined.
Friday’s match will be the season opener for Florida A&M. The Rattlers compiled a 17-8 record last season, advancing to the MEAC Championship where they were defeated by South Carolina State, 4-1.
The Hatters currently own a 2-1 record, with their only loss coming at 43rd-ranked South Florida. Stetson will play Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton, Fla., on Saturday (Feb. 13) before travelling to Fort Myers for Sunday’s match.
Sunday's match against Stetson is set to begin at 1 p.m. at the FGCU Tennis Complex. Admission is free to the public.
