FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s tennis team received the “Days of Caring” award from the Board of Directors at the United Way of Lee, Hendry, Glades in Fort Myers last Friday. The award was presented to team representatives Jen Evans and Morgan Bechtel along with head coach Jennifer Gabou by Volunteer Center Manager Kim Berghs.

“The members of the FGCU women’s tennis team are great role models to and for our community, and we appreciate all that they do to Live United,” said Berghs of the team.

Last season the tennis team compiled over 300 community service hours and continues to do one service event per month as a commitment to the community. For this season their goal is to complete over 400 hours between 10 people.

“I am very proud of our team for receiving this type of recognition off the courts,” said Coach Gabou. “We have a special team that truly wants to make a difference.”

During the 2009-2010 season the team has spent time at organizations including: Special Equestrians, IMPACT, CCMI Soup Kitchen, BINGO at The Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida and has a big project in the works for April 17th, enitled “SPRING BLING.”

SPRING BLING will be the first event of its kind in Southwest Florida. It will be a VIP evening for the pediatric patients of The Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida complete with a Red Carpet, Dinner, Dancing, and Games. They are working in conjunction with United Way, The Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, and For the Kids Foundation.
