Monday, March 08, 2010

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s tennis team claimed another A-Sun victory today with a 5-2 win over Kennesaw State. With the win, the Eagles improve to 4-5 overall and 2-2 in the Atlantic Sun. The Owls drop to 6-7, 0-4 in conference.

The Blue and Green dominated the doubles matches, sweeping the Owls on all three courts. "Today our team took care of business in doubles," said head coach Jennifer Gabou.

The Eagles went up 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory by junior Jessica Sweeting (Freeport, Bahamas) over Iesha Holton. After Priscillia Villemond (Les Bordes, France) fell to Vera Shkudina, 6-4, 6-2, Iris Rendon (San Antonio, Tex.) brought the Eagles one match closer to the win by defeating Mackenzie Swindall, 6-1, 6-2.

With FGCU leading 3-1, freshmen Morgan Bechtel (Toledo, Ohio) thumped Therese Lagerkuist, 6-2, 6-2 to clinch the team win. Bibiana Almeida (Porto, Portugal) also added a 7-6 (4), 6-4 win over Ayano Tanaka.

"Last year we lost to KSU 6-1, so to beat them 5-2 shows our improvement in just one year," said coach Gabou. "I always tell my team that hard work pays off, and today it did."

The Eagles will be back in action this Thursday (Mar. 11) when they host the Atlantic Sun No. 2 preseason selection, ETSU. The match is set to begin at 2:30 p.m. at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
