ATHENS, Ga. – On day one at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships hosted by the University Georgia in Athens, Ga. at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, the FGCU women’s tennis team began the four-day event with four singles matches and a pair of doubles contests.
On Friday, the Eagles dropped each of their four singles matches as senior Iris Rendon (San Antonio, Texas/Tyler Junior College), sophomores Melissa Narzissenfeld (Tampa, Fla./Academy of the Holy Names) and Morgan Bechtel (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) and freshman Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies) each fell in straight sets to opponents from Florida State, UCF, Florida and Georgia Tech, respectively.
In double events, the duo of Narzissenfeld and Mandic fell 3-8 to Georgia State’s Tereza Lerova and Kir Kemp. FGCU’s other match in the doubles events was a hard fought contest. The tandem of Bechtel and Rendon held a 7-6 lead on the USF doubles team of before falling 7-9.
"Morgan and Iris played very well in doubles today and are continuing to improve,” said head coach Jennifer Gabou. “They had a great opportunity but came up short against a very strong USF team."
In the singles division, 14 of the top 15 seeds advanced into the second round, nine of which won to advance into the round of 16.
On Saturday, singles competition will begin at 2 p.m. Consolation singles competition will begin at noon tomorrow with all four Eagles competing in that draw.
