ATHENS, Ga. –
FGCU women’s tennis senior Iris Rendon’s (San Antonio, Texas/Tyler Junior College)
run in consolation bracket of the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships came to an end on Sunday in a hard-fought, three-set match in the quarterfinals hosted by the University of Georgia.
Rendon endured her second three-set match in as many days, as she battled FIU’s Lisa Johnson in the quarterfinals. The San Antonio native jumped out to an early lead by taking the first set, 6-3. After dropping her first set of the consolation tournament, Johnson bounced back with 6-2 win in the second and third set to take the match.
“I’m really proud of Iris and her showing in this tournament,” said head coach Jen Gabou. “She is proving that she can compete at a high level and is stepping her game up big time.”
Rendon advanced to Sunday’s quarterfinal match against Johnson with two wins on Saturday. Rendon began the 32-player singles consolation tournament with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 win against Central Florida’s Courtney Griffith. Just minutes after picking up the win, Rendon returned for the second round against UNF’s Melanie Aguirre who defeated Muriel Wacker of Georgia Tech in the first round. Rendon made quick work of Aguirre, taking both sets 6-1, 6-1.
FGCU will close out the fall portion of its 2010-11 season on Nov. 12-14 at the Lakewood Ranch Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic.
