LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – On day one at the Lakewood Ranch Clay Court Classic, the FGCU women’s tennis team competed in six singles matches and a trio of doubles matches. Sophomore Bibiana Almeida (Porto, Portugal/Schiller International School) came away with a victory in her first singles match of the event on Friday.
“Today was a great opportunity for our team to play against some very tough competition in both singles and doubles action,” said third-year head coach Jennifer Gabou. “Bibiana played really well in her first singles match of the day and was able to come away with a nice win. Collectively, I was proud of the way the team battled and forced a few matches to come down to just a couple points.”
In singles action, Almeida defeated Oklahoma State’s Leyla Simmons, 6-3, 7-6 (3), in the tournament’s opening round. The second-year player wasn’t as fortunate in round two, falling to No. 1 seed Biance Eichkorn (Miami), 6-1, 6-0.
Facing national powerhouse competition, the Eagles were sent away in their other four singles matches of the day. Baylor’s Abby Stainback defeated sophomore Morgan Bechtel (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Acedemy) and classmate Melissa Narzissenfeld (Tampa, Fla./Academy of the Holy Names) fell to Baylor’s Aya Bara, 6-0, 6-3.
Additionally, the singles portion of the day saw senior Iris Rendon (San Antonio, Texas/Tyler Junior College) fall to Miami’s Danielle Mills, 6-1, 6-1, and freshman Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies) go down to Oklahoma State’s Malika Rose, 6-4, 6-2.
The tandem of Narzissenfeld and Mandic battled in a close match with Jordan Zachary and Vivian Pietraroia (Miss. St.) as doubles action got underway. The duo forced the match to a tie break, but came away on the short side of a 9-8 (10-8) defeat.
Also in doubles action, the pair of Rendon and Bechtel was eliminated, 8-2, by the team of Rose and Sardinha (Ok. St.), while Almeida, teaming with Baylor’s Steinback, was dropped by Notre Dame’s Chrissie McGaffigan and Julie Sabacinski, 8-0.
The Lakewood Ranch Clay Court Classic picks back up tomorrow morning, with singles action set to begin at 9:30 a.m. The Eagles will have four competitors in the tournament's back draw, including Rendon, Bechtel, Narzissenfeld and Mandic.
