LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – The final day of the Lakewood Ranch Clay Court Classic came to a close on Sunday afternoon in Lakewood Ranch, Fla. With another stellar performance, FGCU senior Iris Rendon (San Antonio, Texas/Tyler Junior College) won the back draw in her final competition at the three-day event.
"I am very excited for Iris today," said third-year head coach Jennifer Gabou. "She has really grown into her game and to have these type of wins at a large event is a big step for our program."
Rendon received a walk over Oklahoma State’s Kanyapat Narattana to open the day, and went on to defeat Jordan Zachary of Mississippi State 6-4, 6-1 in the consolation finals. The win marked the third over an SEC opponent for the Eagle senior in two days, as she defeated a pair of Mississippi State opponents on Saturday.
"It was a great experience to play in a clay court tournament and exciting to win the consolation draw as a senior," said Rendon. "This will definitely be a memorable fall season and it gives me motivation heading into the spring."
The tournament was hosted by ESPN broadcaster Dick Vitale who presented the trophy to Rendon at the conclusion of the event.
As the fall season draws to a close at Lakewood Ranch, the FGCU women’s tennis team will get time to prepare for the Hilton Garden Eagle Invite scheduled for January 15-17 at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
