FORT MYERS, Fla. – To open the 2011 championship season, the FGCU women’s tennis team is set to host the FGCU-Hilton Garden Inn Invitational at the FGCU Tennis Complex this weekend. The 10 programs, including five ranked teams, will take to the court on Jan. 15-17 with an 8 a.m. start each morning.

"This event is the only one of its kind in Southwest Florida,” commented FGCU third-year head coach Jennifer Gabou. “There will be just over 100 student-athletes from 11 Division I Universities in attendance. These players are from across the nation and from around the world. I am looking forward to seeing the NCAA’s nationally-ranked talent compete on our FGCU courts this weekend."

The Eagles will welcome nationally-ranked programs such as No. 25 Illinois, No. 28 USF, No. 50 Purdue, No. 66 North Texas, and No. 70 UNF, in addition to Akron, Louisville, Northwestern State, Stetson and Wichita State to the FGCU campus.

The tournament will get underway with doubles team draws each morning at 8 a.m. and will be followed by the singles draws later each day. Singles matches will consist of a best of three format with a 10-point breaker for the third set. Each doubles match will play an eight-game pro set per day. Tournament draws will be available at FGCUAthletics.com later Thursday evening.
