Sunday, January 16, 2011

FORT MYERS, Fla. – With day two in the books at the FGCU-Hilton Garden Inn Invitational, the FGCU women’s tennis team continued their success by picking up another pair of singles wins at the FGCU Tennis Complex on Sunday. Sophomores Morgan Bechtel (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) and Bibiana Almeida (Porto, Portugal/Schiller International School) were each victorious over their competition.

“Bibiana and Morgan definitely stepped it up today,” said third-year FGCU head coach Jennifer Gabou. “They dug deep to pull out their wins and they set a great example for how to compete in two tough matches.”

Bechtel mounted a big win over Amy Joubert of No. 66 North Texas in flight six singles play. After falling in the first set, 7-5, and going down, 1-4, in the second, Bechtel rallied back to a victory in a 10-point tiebreaker, 5-7, 7-6 (4), 10-7.

“This is the best feeling that I have experienced since I have been at FGCU and my best win to this point in my career,” said Bechtel. “I really tried to stay focused mentally and fought for every point, and I was able to come away with the win.”

Also scoring a victory in singles action, Almeida outlasted Kathrin Lange from Northwestern State in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. Through two days of competition, the Blue and Green have notched a total of five singles victories.

In day two doubles play, the pair of senior Iris Rendon (San Antonio, Texas/Tyler Junior College) and Bechtel fell to North Texas’ Nadia Lee and Madura Ranganathan, 8-1, and Louisville’s duo of Mandry and Bokhari dropped FGCU’s freshmen twosome of Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies) and Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/De Kuilen HS), 9-7.

The FGCU-Hilton Garden Inn Invitational comes to completion on Monday afternoon at the FGCU Tennis Complex. The tournament will get underway with doubles competitions in the morning at 8 a.m. and will be followed by singles play and award presentations later in the day. Singles matches consist of a best of three format with a 10-point breaker for the third set. Each doubles match plays an eight-game pro set per day.
