Monday, January 17, 2011

FORT MYERS, Fla. – On a rain soaked afternoon at the FGCU Tennis Complex, the FGCU women’s tennis team competed in the final day of the FGCU-Hilton Garden Inn Invitational. Although many of the matches were cancelled due to the weather, the Blue and Green were still able to earn a pair of doubles victories and a singles win from sophomore Bibiana Almeida (Porto, Portugal/Schiller International School).

“All-in-all I saw a lot of encouraging play on the courts today, and throughout the weekend,” said FGCU head coach Jennifer Gabou. “We have a couple of good weeks of practice to put in before our first match against FAU and I am looking forward to starting the season.”

The Eagles that were able to compete notched a few wins including Almeida’s defeat of No. 50 Purdue’s Kirsten Magi, 7-5, 6-3, to take fifth place in the Flight 8 singles draw. FGCU was able to bring their singles win total to six, including a trio against members from nationally-ranked programs (No. 50 Purdue and two against No. 66 North Texas).

FGCU’s doubles tandem of freshmen Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/De Kuilen HS) and Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies) defeated Atlantic Sun Conference rivals Jen Miller and Susana Aguirre of Stetson, 8-4, for seventh place in Flight 4. Additionally, Almeida claimed another victory in her doubles pairing with sophomore Melissa Narzissenfeld (Tampa, Fla./Academy of Holy Names), winning out over the defending A-Sun Championship duo of Victoria Krook and Melinda Doak of No. 70 UNF, 8-6, taking second place in Flight 5.

Preparation now turns toward the Blue and Green’s Feb. 12 meeting with FAU in Boca Raton, Fla. at 2 p.m. Results and recaps of the event will be available at FGCUAthletics.com following the day’s competition.
