BOCA RATON, Fla. – After taking the doubles point to start off the afternoon, the FGCU women’s tennis followed with four singles wins en route to a 5-2 victory over FAU on Saturday afternoon at Patch Reef Park in Boca Raton, Fla. Sophomores Melissa Narzissenfeld (Tampa, Fla./Academy of the Holy Names) and Morgan Bechtel (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy), as well as, freshmen Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/De Kuilen HS) and Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies) all picked up singles wins.
The Eagles’ record moved to 1-0 on the young season, while the Owls’ dropped to 1-4 on the year.
"Today we were able to shake some of the rust off against a solid FAU team,” said third-year head coach Jennifer Gabou. “It was great to see the team back in action and we pulled out some good three-set wins. I am looking forward to our match against Bethune-Cookman tomorrow morning."
After the FAU tandem of Justine Humair and Natasha Basma defeated the FGCU pair of sophomore Bibiana Almeida (Porto, Portugal/Schiller International School) and senior Iris Rendon (San Antonio, Texas/Tyler Junior College), 8-2, in the No. 1 position, the Eagles answered by claiming the final two doubles matches. The freshman duo of Mandic and Botha took down the Owls’ Cassie Bergeson and Marlene Ryan, 8-5, and Bechtel and Narzissenfeld followed with an 8-5 win over FAU’s Natasha Phillips and Erika Mrazkova, to help FGCU take the opening doubles point.
In No. 5 singles action, Botha turned away Mrazkova, 7-6 (5), 6-2, and Mandic defeated Phillips, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 6 spot. In the match-clinching No. 4 matchup, Bechtel dropped the first set to Bergeson but rallied back to take the final two frames for a 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 victory, giving the Eagles a 4-2 edge. At No. 3, Narzissenfeld padded the Eagles’ score with her 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory after falling in the opening set and rebounding to defeat Basma in three.
