FORT MYERS, Fla. – Blanking Bethune-Cookman, 7-0, at the FGCU Tennis Complex on Sunday, the FGCU women’s tennis team improved its record to 2-0 on the young 2011 championship season. The Eagles swept the three matches to take the opening doubles point and went on to claim all six of the singles competitions in the home opener.
"It was nice to win our first home match of the season,” said third-year head coach Jennifer Gabou. “There are still some things that we can improve, as I have yet to see our team play at the level they do in practice. Coach Barnes and I are looking for the team to keep stepping up the intensity and competiveness. Looking ahead, FAMU is a solid team and Stetson is undefeated, so the next two matches will be a great opportunity for our team to raise its level."
The Eagles made quick work of the Wildcats, completing the match in just less than three hours. In the day’s doubles action, the team of sophomore Bibiana Almeida (Porto Portugal/Schiller International School) and senior Iris Rendon (San Antonio, Texas/Tyler Junior College) defeated B-CU’s Katarina Szaboova and Stacey Lopez, 8-1, in the No. 1 spot. Also winning 8-1, the sophomore pair of Melissa Narzissenfeld (Tamps, Fla./Academy of the Holy Names) and Morgan Bechtel (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) turned away the Wildcats’ Nancy Gonzales and Laura Rodriguez.
Completing the doubles sweep for the Blue and Green, the freshmen duo of Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies) and Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/De Kuilen HS) took down the visiting pair of Shereen Peterson-Paul and Andrea Paez, 8-4.
Success from doubles play carried over to the afternoon’s singles action for the Eagles, as they finished off the 7-0 rout of the Wildcats. Botha and Mandic each earned straight-set victories over the opposition, knocking off Rodriguez and Reijina Hopkins, 6-0, 6-0, respectively.
For the second consecutive day, Bechtel clinched the match for the Blue and Green with the fourth point during her 6-2, 6-0 win over Gonzales, in the No. 4 position. In the No. 1 singles spot, Rendon eliminated Szaboova, 6-2, 6-3, while Narzissenfeld also earned a No. 3 straight-set victory over Lopez, 6-2, 6-4. Using three sets, Almeida finished off the afternoon shutout of the Wildcats, defeating Peterson, 4-6, 6-4, 10-4, in the No. 2 position.
FGCU will look to keep up its winning ways when it welcomes FAMU to the FGCU Tennis Complex on Sunday, Feb. 20 beginning at 10 a.m. Results from the competition will be available at www.FGCUAthletics.com following the day’s action.
