FORT MYERS, Fla. – Pushing its winning streak to three matches, the FGCU women’s tennis team defeated Belmont in a 7-0 rout on Thursday afternoon at the FGCU Tennis Complex. The Eagles swept the three doubles matches to take the opening point, and went on to take all six singles contests in the Atlantic Sun dual meeting.
Leveling their conference mark, the Eagles upped their record to 7-5 (3-3 A-Sun) on the year, while Belmont fell to 5-8 (1-3 A-Sun) this spring. The Blue and Green were coming off back-to-back 4-3 victories over Mercer (March 12) and George Washington (March 14).
"Simply put, we got it done today,” said third-year head coach Jennifer Gabou. “I continue to see our team steadily improve and compete with more fire through each and every match."
The Eagles swept the day’s doubles point by taking all three of the opening paired contests. The FGCU team of senior Iris Rendon (San Antonio, Texas/Tyler Junior College) and freshman Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/De Kuilen HS) defeated the Belmont pair of Laura Stack and Lindsey Bennett, 8-0 in the No. 1 position to open the contest. In 8-4 decisions, the Eagles’ team of freshman Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies) and sophomore Morgan Bechtel (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) took down the Bruins’ team of Abigail Hogan and Abby Leatherwood in the No. 2 spot, followed by another victory by sophomore Bibiana Almeida (Porto, Portugal/Schiller International School) and junior Jen Evans (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) over Catherine Holliday and Natalia Nunes in the No. 3 spot to complete the sweep.
Success from doubles action carried over to singles play for the Blue and Green as they took each of the six contests. In a straight-sets victory, Evans turned away Bennett, 6-0, 6-0, in the No. 4 matchup, and was followed by a 6-2, 6-0 win from Almeida over Stack in the No. 5 contest.
In the No. 1 contest, Bechtel was able to clinch the match for the Eagles as she earned their fourth point with a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of Leatherwood. It was the Toledo, Ohio native’s first career victory in the No. 1 position.
Also earning victories for the Blue and Green, Rendon was victorious over Fabiana Mersan, 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 2 spot, and Botha defeated Holliday, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 3 singles. Completing the sweep of the dual, Mandic trumped Nunes, 6-4, 6-4, in the No. 6 position, as the Eagles went on the 7-0 victory.
The Eagles will return to the FGCU Tennis Complex on Saturday at 11 a.m. for another A-Sun dual with visiting Lipscomb. The Bisons come into the contest with a 2-9 (1-3 A-Sun) mark, after falling to Stetson, 7-0, on Thursday afternoon.
