FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s tennis team bolstered its lineup on Tuesday with the addition of a pair of in-state student-athletes, as fourth-year head coach Jennifer Gabou announced that Laura Lipman (Captiva Island, Fla.) and Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) will join the program in 2011-12.
Lipman will join the Eagles in the fall, while Means will begin her career in the blue and green at the start of the second semester in January.
“I am very excited to have Laura joining us this fall and Sarah in January,” said Gabou. “They are both tremendously hard workers on the court and in the classroom. They will have an immediate impact on our team and I look forward to seeing them competing as Eagles.”
A three-star recruiting according to www.tennisrecruiting.net, Lipman played 15 of her 19 matches this past year against four-star or higher competition. Regarded as one of the top players in Southwest Florida, Lipman picked up five wins against competition rated at three stars or better. Lipman was also part of a doubles team that won the state tournament back draw.
Means turned in a solid senior season at Wiregrass Ranch High School, teaming with her sister Elizabeth to win the Florida Class 3A State doubles title, while finishing second in the No. 1 singles bracket. The Means sisters cruised through the No. 1 doubles tournament, winning every set, including a 6-2, 6-4 triumph in the final.
This past May, Means was a quarterfinalist at the Women’s Open Clay Court Championship in singles action and a semifinalist in doubles with her sister at the same tournament. The duo also won a doubles title at the Celsius Winter Super Series Tournament in January of 2011 and the Lake Cane Labor Day Super Series in August of 2010.
