FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s tennis team begins its fall season at the UNLV Fall Invitational in Las Vegas this weekend. The competition gets underway on Friday morning and concludes on Sunday afternoon.
The format for the tournament will be four singles and doubles flights. FGCU’s flight draws are listed below.
“The team is very excited to be traveling to the UNLV Invitational in Las Vegas,” said fourth-year head coach Jennifer Gabou. “They have been working extremely hard since they’ve been back and this will be a great test of their skills this weekend.”
The Blue and Green face some tough competition coming from Ole Miss, Northern Arizona, New Mexico State, Long Beach State, Utah and host UNLV. Long Beach State (No. 36), UNLV (No. 38), Ole Miss (No. 40) and Utah (No. 49) were ranked in the Top 50 of the ITA National Rankings a season ago.
The field will also feature nationally-ranked players in Lucia Batta of UNLV, who is No. 95 in the ITA preseason singles rankings. Caroline Rohde Moe of Ole Miss is the No. 1 seed in Flight 1 of the singles bracket.
FGCU will be taking five players to the tournament with senior Jen Evans (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) leading the way after a 8-5 record in dual matches last season. Junior Morgan Bechtel (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy), sophomore Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/De Kuilen HS) and sophomore Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies) round out the upperclassmen. Freshman Zhoe Solaun (Gainesville, Fla./Bucholz HS) will be making her Eagles debut this weekend.
