FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s tennis team heads to Miami for the 2011 Panther Invitational hosted by FIU this weekend. The competition gets underway on Friday morning and concludes on Sunday afternoon.

The Eagles begin play on Friday with doubles competition starting at noon against North Florida and singles begins at 1:30 against host FIU. “This weekend we will play some of the toughest talent in the state of Florida,” said fourth-year head coach Jennifer Gabou. “We look forward to seeing our players compete.”

The Green and Blue face competitors from Barry University, UNF and host FIU, who was ranked No. 70 in the ITA National Rankings a season ago. North Florida lost in the A-Sun tournament championship match last season and Barry is the reigning Division II national champion.

In the first fall tournament of the year at the UNLV Invitational, FGCU’s Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/De Kuilen HS), Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies) and Morgan Bechtel (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) each picked up a singles victory to start off the fall season.

In doubles action, Bechtel and Botha went 1-1 picking up a victory against Long Beach State’s duo of Karolina Rozenberg and Anna Jeczmionka.

FGCU will be bringing five players to the tournament including Botha, Mandic, Bechtel, Jen Evans (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) and Zhoe Solaun (Gainesville, Fla./Bucholz HS).
