FORT MYERS, Fla. – Senior Jen Evans (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS), junior Morgan Bechtel (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) and sophomore Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies) will represent the FGCU women’s tennis team this weekend at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships hosted by the University of Florida. This year’s Southeast Region event will take place from Oct. 21-24 in Gainesville, Fla.
The USTA/ITA Regional Championships will feature some of the top men's and women's players competing in each of the ITA's regions across the country over the course of the next two months. Over 8,000 student-athletes from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges compete in the USTA/ITA Regional Championships held at 85 different college campuses across the country.
The Eagles will have three singles competitors and one doubles team travelling to the event. Evans and Mandic were both selected to play in the singles and the doubles draws, while Bechtel was selected for just singles. The singles draw is a 64-player draw with a first round consolation, while doubles is a 32-team draw. The number one singles seed is UF’s Lauren Embree and the No. 2 seed is the 2010 NCAA Division I Singles Champion Chelsey Gullickson (UGA).
“I am very much looking forward to seeing the competition at the ITA Regional this weekend,” said head coach Jennifer Gabou. “This will be the highest level of play that our team will see in the fall and I am excited to see how they respond.”
The tournament will be comprised of 19 teams, including eight teams that were ranked in the top-75 in the final 2010-11 ITA National Team Rankings. Florida (No. 1), the reigning national champions, Miami (No. 7), Georgia (No. 8), Georgia Tech (No. 13), Florida State (No. 15), South Florida (No. 41), Georgia State (No. 56) and FIU (No. 70) represent the eight ranked teams.
