FORT MYERS, Fla. – Led by junior Morgan Bechtel’s (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) singles victory, the FGCU women’s tennis team completed Day One of the FGCU Eagle Invitational at the FGCU Tennis Complex on Saturday.
Bechtel won in straight sets against Witchita State’s Veronika Blaskova, 6-1, 7-5.
Freshman Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) lost in the third set tiebreaker 10-7 against Delia Damaschin from Witchita State. In her first match as an Eagle, Means almost rallied to win after taking the second set 6-3 but dropped the tiebreaker.
Sophomore Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/De Kuilen HS) also fell in the third set tiebreaker against Iowa State’s Jenna Langhorst, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 1-0 (10-5). Botha won the first set 6-3 before dropping a tough tiebreaker in the second set 7-4.
“Morgan really stepped up today in her singles match,” said head coach Jennifer Gabou. “I can see that she has been working hard over break and is ready for this season. We were close on Means’ court as she lost 10-7 in the third and on Botha’s as well. Overall it was a good showing for the first match of the season.”
In doubles, Bechtel paired with sophomore Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies) falling 9-8 (7-4) in a tiebreaker against Iowa State’s Langhorst and Cassens. Bechtel and Mandic had chances to win the match serving with an 8-7 lead but fell just short.
Results and Recaps will be available on www.FGCUathletics.com after each day of the tournament.
