FORT MYERS, Fla. –The FGCU women’s tennis team completed Day Two of the FGCU Eagle Invitational by winning three singles matches and one doubles match on Sunday afternoon at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
In doubles, sophomore Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/De Kuilen HS) and freshman Zhoe Solaun (Gainesville, Fla./Bucholz HS) earned an 8-4 victory against Leyshyna and Sardak from Northwestern State of Louisiana.
“Today we did much better than yesterday,” said head coach Jennifer Gabou. “Means dug deep to pull out her first collegiate win over Pronina (Iowa State) and I am proud of the way she competed. It was good to see Botha and Mandic pick up wins against NSULA and FAU as this should add to their confidence. I am looking forward to seeing them all close out the final day of competition.”
Freshman Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) earned a tough straight sets win against Iowa State’s Ksenia Pronina, 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-4). Means picked up her first collegiate win after winning both tiebreakers 7-5 and 7-4. Means held a 5-2 advantage in the second set before holding on for the win 7-6.
“It was a lot of emotions but it was exciting,” said Means. “I got up 5-2 in the second set and almost lost it but was able to keep my nerves down. I was excited to come away with the win in such a tough match and I feel that I built on what I didn’t do yesterday.”
Botha also rebounded from yesterday’s loss with a straight sets victory against Natalia Tomaszewicz from FAU, 6-3, 6-2.
Sophomore Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies) picked up a win against NSULA’s Olga Leyshyna, 1-6, 6-3, 10-8. Mandic rallied to win the second set 6-3 and won the tiebreaker 10-8 in the third set.
Results and Recaps will be available on www.FGCUathletics.com after each day of the tournament.
