FORT MYERS, Fla. – Coming off a successful FGCU Eagle Invitational to open the season, the FGCU women’s tennis team is set to compete in the first dual matches of the 2012 spring season this weekend. The Eagles will square off against FAU on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and continue with a matchup with Bethune-Cookman at 1 p.m. on Sunday, both at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
“The team has been working really hard to get ready for the season,” said fourth-year head coach Jennifer Gabou. “After getting some much needed experience in the FGCU Eagle Invitational, I believe our team is ready to compete this weekend.”
The Green and Blue return four starters from last year’s squad in senior Jen Evans (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS), junior Morgan Bechtel (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy), and sophomores Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/DeKuilen HS) and Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies).
FGCU has three newcomers who will be competing for the first time in a dual match in freshmen Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS), Zhoe Solaun (Gainesville, Fla./Bucholz HS) and Marina Diez (Miami, Fla./West Broward HS).
FAU holds a 4-1 overall dual record, with its lone loss coming against Stephen F. Austin, 6-1, and its most recent contest resulting in a 6-1 win against Bethune-Cookman on Jan. 28 in Boca Raton, Fla. The Owls are led in singles by senior Justine Humair, who has a 2-2 record at No. 1 singles.
Bethune-Cookman is 1-1 on the season as they travel to Lake Wales, Fla. for their Saturday competition against Webber International before facing off against the Eagles. FGCU will look to improve upon its all-time record of 4-0 against the Wildcats over the weekend.
Results from both of the weekend competitions will be available at www.FGCUAthletics.com at the conclusion of each day.
