FGCU Women's Tennis Drops Home Opener to FAU, 4-3

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s tennis team won the doubles point but fell short in singles against FAU, 4-3, on Saturday at the FGCU Tennis Complex.

With FAU leading the match 3-2, Marlene Ryan clinched the victory with a tough three set win against junior Morgan Bechtel (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy), 5-7, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 3 singles. Bechtel won the first set, 7-5, but fell in the last two sets.

FGCU opened the match by sweeping the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead against the Owls. The team of freshman Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) and sophomore Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/DeKuilen HS) clinched the doubles point at No. 3 doubles against FAU’s Justine Humair and Taylor Briggs, 8-2.

Bechtel and freshman Marina Diez (Miami, Fla./West Broward HS) won at No. 1 doubles over Cassie Bergeson and Marlene Ryan, 8-5.

In the final doubles match, senior Jen Evans (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) and Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies) won a thriller against Natasha Phillips and Natalia Tomaszewicz, 8-7 (8-6).

In singles, FAU quickly evened the match at 1-1 when Natasha Basma defeated Diez, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 2 singles. The Owls took a 2-1 lead after Humair won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, over Means, at No. 1 singles.

Botha would tie the match at 2-2 after winning in straight sets against Erika Mrazkova, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 5 singles.

The Owls would take the lead at 3-2 when Natalia Tomaszewicz won in straight sets against Mandic, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 6 singles.

Evans won the final match to make the final score 4-3 after outlasting Bergeson, 6-2, 6-7 (7-9), 6-3, at No. 4 singles. Evans was able to regroup after losing a tough second set tiebreaker, 7-9, before winning the third set 6-3.

The Green and Blue host Bethune-Cookman on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
