FORT MYERS, Fla. – Finishing the weekend with a perfect 2-0 singles record and an unblemished 2-0 doubles mark, FGCU women’s tennis senior Jen Evans (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) claims her first career Atlantic Sun Player of the Week award, announced by the league office on Wednesday.
Evans' accolade is only the third ever women's tennis Player of the Week Award for the Eagles.
Evans helped the Eagles to a 1-1 record last weekend with a victory against Bethune-Cookman (W, 6-1) and a close loss against FAU (L, 4-3).
Against FAU on Saturday, the local product from Fort Myers, won at No. 4 singles against Cassie Bergeson, 6-2, 6-7 (7-9), 6-3, and teamed with sophomore Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies) to win at No. 2 doubles against Natasha Phillips and Natalia Tomaszewicz, 8-7 (8-6).
In the match against Bethune-Cookman on Sunday, Evans defeated Stacey Speller at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4), and remained perfect in doubles by teaming with Mandic for a 8-7 (7-5) win over Gaby Chinchilla and Chinatsu Kajiwara, at No. 2 doubles.
Next up for the Eagles is a home contest against UCF on Saturday, February 18. The match is set for a 10:00 a.m. start at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
