Women's Tennis Set for Battle Against No. 45 USF

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s tennis team is set to compete against BIG EAST foe No. 45 USF on Sunday at 11 a.m. in Tampa, Fla.

The Green and Blue have a 1-2 record after dropping their last match to fellow in-state rival UCF, 6-1, last weekend at the FGCU Tennis Complex. Freshman Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) earned a hard fought win at No. 1 singles over Genevieve Lorbergs, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7).

Sophomore Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/DeKuilen HS) holds a 2-0 record at No. 5 singles with wins over Bethune-Cookman and FAU. Means and senior Jen Evans (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) each have 2-1 dual match records this season.

USF enters the match with a 6-3 overall dual record, coming off a comeback 4-3 win over No. 22 Florida State on Feb. 24. The Bulls are led by Ecaterina Vasenina, who has a 6-3 record at No. 1 singles and is ranked No. 26 in the nation in singles. The match will mark the first meeting between the two teams.

FGCU heads home for the first of seven-straight home matches starting with the Atlantic Sun opener against Kennesaw State on Thursday, Mar. 1 at 12 p.m. at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
