Tampa, Fla. – The FGCU women’s tennis team fell to in-state foe No. 45 USF, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon in Tampa, Fla. The Eagles picked up a victory at No. 3 doubles for their only win of the contest.
The Eagles fall to 1-3 on the season and USF improves to 7-3 with the victory.
In doubles, FGCU earned its lone victory at No. 3 doubles when the team of Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/DeKuilen HS) and Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) outlasted Paola Montoya and Allessondra Bonte, 8-7 (7-1).
In singles, the Green and Blue couldn’t overcome first set losses as the Eagles lost in straight sets at No. 1, 2, and 3 singles. Lucie Rey clinched the match for USF with a victory over freshman Marina Diez (Miami, Fla./West Broward HS), 6-2, 6-0.
In the last three matches, FGCU battled but came up short as Paola Montoya defeated Morgan Bechtel (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy), 6-3, 6-0, at No. 4 singles.
Botha and sophomore Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies) each lost in straight sets at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
The Green and Blue return to the court this week against conference rival Kennesaw State on Mar. 1 at 12 p.m. at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
