FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s tennis team is ready for its Atlantic Sun home opener against Kennesaw State on Thursday, Mar. 1 at 12 p.m. at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
“We’ve played a very tough schedule leading up to the match against Kennesaw State,” said head coach Jennifer Gabou. “Our team is poised for their first conference match and knows they’ll have to give 100 percent against the Owls.”
The Green and Blue have a 1-3 record after dropping their last match to fellow in-state rival USF, 7-0, last Sunday in Tampa, Fla. The team of sophomore Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/DeKuilen HS) and freshman Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) picked up the lone win in doubles against Paola Montoya and Allessondra Bonte, 8-7 (7-1).
Sophomore Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/DeKuilen HS) holds a 2-1 record at No. 5 singles with wins over Bethune-Cookman and FAU. Means and senior Jen Evans (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) each have 2-2 dual match records this season.
Kennesaw State enters the contest with a 5-3 record after winning two of its last three matches. The Owls lost their previous match against Chattanooga, 5-2, on Feb. 25 in Chattanooga, Tenn. Kennesaw State is led in singles by Vera Shkundina with a 5-3 record at No. 1 singles.
FGCU continues its home stand with a non-conference match against BIG EAST foe Villanova on Saturday, Mar. 3 at 10 a.m. at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
