Women's Tennis Prepares for Two Matches Against SIUE and Penn

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s tennis team is set for a pair of non-conference matches at the FGCU Tennis Complex this week. The Eagles will take on Southern Illinois-Edwardsville on Wednesday, Mar. 7 at 10 a.m. and Penn University on Thursday, Mar. 8 at 10 a.m.

FGCU is 3-4 (1-0 A-Sun) on the season with wins over Bethune-Cookman (W, 6-1), Kennesaw State (W, 4-3) and Villanova (W, 6-1). The Eagles recently lost to No. 37 Boston College, 6-1, on Monday with its lone win coming from Morgan Bechtel (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy), who won at No. 4 singles.

The Green and Blue are led by sophomore Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/DeKuilen HS) who holds a 4-2 dual match record at No. 5 singles. Bechtel is 4-3 at No. 4 singles and freshman Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) is 3-4 at No. 1 singles for FGCU.

In doubles, senior Jen Evans (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) and sophomore Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies) have a 5-2 dual match record.

SIU-Edwardsville enters the match with a 4-5 record after losing three-straight to Evansville (L, 7-0), Southern Illinois (L, 6-1) and Saint Louis (L, 4-0). The Cougars are led by Kali Donner with a 3-5 record at No. 1 singles.

Penn (3-4) has a four-match losing streak entering the contest with its last victory coming against Richmond (W, 4-3) back on Feb. 11. The Quakers are led by Sol Eskenazi with a 3-1 record at No. 1 singles.

FGCU continues its home stand with a non-conference match against Virginia Tech on Sunday, Mar. 11 at 10 a.m. at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
