A-Sun Play Continues for Women's Tennis Against Mercer

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s tennis team is set to resume Atlantic Sun conference play against Mercer on Thursday, Mar. 15 at 12 p.m. at the FGCU Tennis Complex.

FGCU is 4-6 (1-0 A-Sun) on the season with wins over Bethune-Cookman (W, 6-1), Kennesaw State (W, 4-3), Villanova (W, 6-1) and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (W, 6-1). The Eagles recently lost to then-No. 59 Virginia Tech, 7-0, on Sunday. The Eagles are hoping to improve their 4-5 record at home this season.

The Eagles are led by freshman Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) at No. 1 singles, followed by senior Jen Evans (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) at No. 2 singles. Freshman Marina Diez (Miami, Fla./West Broward HS) and junior Morgan Bechtel (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) play at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions, respectively. The Green and Blue round out their lineup in singles with sophomore Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/DeKuilen HS) and classmate Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies) at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.

In doubles, the team of Bechtel and Diez are at No. 1 doubles, followed by Evans and Mandic at No. 2 doubles. The squad of Botha and Means are at the No. 3 doubles position for the Eagles.

Mercer enters its first conference match of the season with a 2-4 record after dropping a 7-0 decision to Chattanooga back on Mar. 6. The Bears are led by Lucie Payrat who has a 5-1 dual match record, including a perfect 4-0 mark at No. 2 singles. FGCU has a perfect 4-0 record against Mercer, including a 4-3 win in Macon, Ga. last season.
