Women’s Tennis Hosts Atlantic Sun Rivals UNF and Jacksonville

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s tennis team continues Atlantic Sun conference play against UNF and Jacksonville this weekend. The Eagles host UNF on Thursday, March 29 at 12 p.m. and finish against Jacksonville on Saturday at 12 p.m., both held at the FGCU Tennis Complex.

FGCU is 5-8 (2-2 A-Sun) on the season with wins over Bethune-Cookman (6-1), Kennesaw State (4-3), Villanova (6-1), Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (6-1) and Mercer (7-0). The Eagles recently had a tough road trip dropping matches against USC Upstate (4-3) and ETSU (7-0).

The Eagles are led by freshman Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) at No. 1 singles, followed by senior Jen Evans (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) at No. 2 singles. Freshman Marina Diez (Miami, Fla./West Broward HS) and junior Morgan Bechtel (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) play at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions, respectively. The Green and Blue round out their lineup in singles with sophomore Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/DeKuilen HS) and classmate Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies) at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.

In doubles, the team of Bechtel and Diez are at No. 1 doubles, followed by Evans and Mandic at No. 2 doubles. The squad of Botha and Means are at the No. 3 doubles position for the Eagles.

UNF is 8-4 on the season, including a 3-0 record in the A-Sun. UNF is coming off a back-to-back sweeps against West Virginia (7-0) and Jacksonville (7-0). The Ospreys are led by Lorena Aviles, who has a 7-2 dual match record, including a 2-1 mark at No. 1 singles.

Jacksonville (4-9, 1-2 A-Sun) lost to UNF 7-0 on Monday, March 26 and earned its first A-Sun win against USC Upstate (6-1) on Mar. 17. The Dolphins are led by Aline Staudt, who has a 9-3 dual match record at No. 1 singles.
