Senior Day Highlights Weekend Action for Women's Tennis

FORT MYERS, Fla. – In its final home Atlantic Sun conference match of the season, the FGCU women’s tennis team is set to host rival Stetson on Senior Day and a non-conference match against Binghamton this weekend. The Eagles host the Hatters on Saturday, April 7 at 9 a.m. and finish against the Bearcats on Sunday at 2 p.m., both held at the FGCU Tennis Complex.

Prior to the start of the match against Stetson, the Eagles will honor their lone senior Jen Evans (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) who has tallied 18 dual match singles wins and 30 doubles wins as a member of the Green and Blue.     

FGCU is 6-9 (3-3 A-Sun) on the season with wins over Bethune-Cookman (6-1), Kennesaw State (4-3), Villanova (6-1), Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (6-1), Mercer (7-0) and Jacksonville (6-1). The Eagles lost to A-Sun leader UNF (7-0) before earning a bounce-back win against Jacksonville (6-1) last weekend.

The Eagles are led by freshman Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) at No. 1 singles, followed by Evans at No. 2 singles. Freshman Marina Diez (Miami, Fla./West Broward HS) and junior Morgan Bechtel (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) play at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions, respectively. The Green and Blue round out their lineup in singles with sophomore Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/DeKuilen HS) and classmate Gyanna Mandic (Oshowa, Canada/Edison Academies) at No. 5 and No. 6.

In doubles, the team of Bechtel and Diez are at No. 1, followed by Evans and Mandic at No. 2. The squad of Botha and Means are at the No. 3 doubles position for the Eagles.

Stetson is 11-4 on the season, including a 4-2 record in the A-Sun, and is coming off a 5-2 setback against in-state foe UCF on Wednesday, April 4. The Hatters went 1-1 against Jacksonville (W, 7-0) and UNF (L, 6-1), and are led by Sara Lazarevic, who has a 9-6 dual match record, including a 2-4 mark in conference at No. 1 singles.

Binghamton (5-10) has lost five of its last six matches with the lone victory coming against Boston University (5-2). The Bearcats are led by Jillian Santos, who has an 8-7 dual match record at No. 1 singles.
