FORT MYERS, Fla. – With the 2012 spring season just completed, the FGCU women’s tennis team added some depth to its roster with the signing of incoming freshman Johanna Sterkel (Schwetzingen, Germany).
“We are very excited to welcome Johanna to our team,” said fourth-year head coach Jennifer Gabou. “She is very talented and will help take our team to the next level.”
Coming to the team in August as an incoming freshman, Sterkel joins the Green and Blue after a solid junior career in Germany. Sterkel is ranked 130 in the Open women’s rankings and is No. 29 in the under-18 list for Germany. Since 2007, she has played in numerous tournaments and hopes to contribute right away for FGCU next season.
As they welcome Johanna to Fort Myers, the FGCU women’s tennis team is coming off its best season since joining Division I with 10 victories. The Green and Blue earned a No. 3 seed in their first-ever A-Sun Championships and defeated Jacksonville (4-2) in the quarterfinals. The Eagles ended their run with a lost to host ETSU (4-1) in the semifinals.
Freshman Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) was named to the A-Sun All-Conference second team and selected to the All-Freshmen team. Sophomore Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/DeKuilen HS) and junior Morgan Bechtel (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) were honored as All-Academic team members with Botha being a unanimous selection. FGCU returns five of its six starters in the singles lineup in hopes of a return trip to the A-Sun Championships next season.
